John H. Riehle

U.S. Veteran

JOHN H. RIEHLE, age 86, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away Monday, August 5, 2013 at Grand Village surrounded by his family.

John lived a long and full life. He was born in Foxholm, North Dakota to parents, Charles and Catherine Riehle on April 22, 1927. His family moved to the Grand Rapids area during the Great Depression in 1936. He traveled the world as a Merchant Marine during World War II. While on leave in New York, he gave his seat on the bus to a beautiful Brooklyn Italian girl, Delia Panebianco, whom he married on August 15, 1948.

A 43 year career with Blandin Paper Company allowed John and Delia to raise 7 children; Jan, John, Carole, Mark, Steve, Patty and David. John and Delia were also rewarded with 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. After the loss of his wife Delia in 2003, John was fortunate enough to marry long time family friend Jeanette Powers. Jeanette, a true caregiver, dedicated her remaining years providing John comfort, care and companionship until her passing in 2010.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Delia; wife, Jeanette; son, Steven; brother, Daniel; and sister-in-law, Lenore Riehle.

John is survived by his children, Janet (Kearby) Riehle-Cotter, John (Sam) Riehle, Carole (Jim) Woodard, Mark (Jill Acheson) Riehle, Patricia Riehle, and David (Joanne) Riehle; sister, Catherine (Doug) Scherf; brothers, Dennis Riehle, Peter (Elsie) Riehle, and Paul (Pam) Riehle; sister-in-law, Elza Riehle; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial with full military honors will be in Itasca-Calvary Cemetery.
