SHIRLEY M. SPENCER, age 84, of Hill City, MN died Tuesday April 26, 2011 at her home surrounded by her children.

Shirley was born in 1926 to Lindsey and Edna Christensen in Hill City, where she grew up and attended schools. She graduated from the St. Mary’s Nursing program in Rochester, MN. Shirley was united in marriage to Donald G. Johnson in June 1949 in Minneapolis MN. They raised their family in the Twin Cities area, before returning to Hill City in 1975. She was the owner/broker of Johnson Realty in Hill City for many years where they enjoyed their home on Hill Lake. Don passed away in 1996. Shirley married E. “Spence” Spencer in St. Cloud, MN in March of 1999. Spence passed away in 2007. Shirley was active in her church and the Hill City Chamber of Commerce, she was an artist who enjoyed painting, doll making and sculpting. She was also an avid horse enthusiast. Shirley was an "exceptional" mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, and will be dearly missed by all. The family would like to thank Itasca Hospice, especially Mikki Metzger, for the wonderful care Shirley received.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Donald Johnson; husband E. “Spence” Spencer; daughter, Jill Wiswell; two brothers, Richard and Ronnie Christensen; and three sisters, Jean Stanfield, Geraldine Christensen and Barbara Kuyava.

Shirley is survived by three children, Wendy (Ed) Beduhn of St. Cloud, MN, Greg (Bonnie) Johnson of Rogers, MN, and Kathy Bounds of Hill City, MN; three sisters, Georgia Benson of Hill City, MN, Mary Christensen of Big Lake, MN, and Suzanne (Steve Spellman) Christensen of Alameda , CA; three brothers, James Christensen of Grand Rapids, MN, Ray (Sandy) Christensen of Brooklyn Center, MN, and Dale Christensen of Sacramento, CA; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 29th from 10:00 A.M. until the 11:00 A.M. Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, MN. Rev. Fr. Jerry Weiss will officiate. Private family interment will be at a later date.

Arrangements are by Rowe Funeral Home and Crematory of Grand Rapids, MN.
