Over his long career he served on the boards of Hope House, Kiesler House, and on the Arrowhead Regional Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  Along with Lois he was a supporter of Camp Fire Girls of America and Camp Bluewater. During his four sons' years playing high school football, he served as the team doctor, attending both home and away games where he was a familiar presence on the sidelines.  He was an avid supporter of Ducks Unlimited, and Trout Unlimited.

Following his retirement in 1993, he continued on the various boards and added the Grand Rapids Library Foundation and enjoyed participating in the planning of the new library.  It was then that he met his second wife, Janet (Walsh) Crawford.  They were married in August of 2001 and made their home at Beaulieu Rinn on Island Lake.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids since 1960 and served on various church councils over the years.  In 2016 he became an Oblate of St. Benedict, out of St. Benedict's Monastery in St. Joseph, MN.
