Obituary

Alan Bruce Humrickhouse, age 94, of Grand Rapids, MN died Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at his home at River Grand Senior Living, surrounded by loved ones.

Alan "Bruce" was born in 1932 to Alan and Marion "Gray" Humrickhouse in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Little Falls High School then attended Dunwoody Industrial College for machinist training. Bruce and Emmy Koprek were united in marriage on March 26, 1951.

Bruce enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict. He later continued his military career as a member of the Army Reserve, retiring after 21 years. He was very proud of his years of service in the U.S. military.

He began his career with the State of Minnesota in 1959 as a forestry technician in Northome. He held a variety of increasingly responsible positions throughout the state during the first half of his career.  Beginning in the mid-70s he became a leader in developing the state's aerial firefighting suppression program.  He flew lead plane on many fires in Minnesota and throughout the country during the 70s and 80s.  He retired from the Department of Natural Resources as a forestry supervisor and chief pilot in 1991, culminating a 31-year career of service to the people and resources of Minnesota.

Bruce and Emmy rented a cabin every summer near Hovland, MN on the shore of Lake Superior, and the memories made there are treasured by generations of his family. Bruce was a lifelong, avid outdoorsman. His passion for hunting and fishing was deep, and was passed along to his brother, son and grandson. Bruce was also an active member of the Episcopal Church, the Masons, the Sons of the American Revolution, and several hunting and outdoor organizations.

Bruce is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Gretchen Callaway and Candace Christensen.

He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Emmy; son, Scott (Debra) Humrickhouse of Altoona, WI; daughter, Heidi Humrickhouse of Taft, TX; brother, Michael (Carole) Humrickhouse of Baxter, MN; sister, Pamela (Ron) Lind of Langley, WA; grandchildren, Paul Humrickhouse of Powell, TN, Kate (Richard) Larson of Eau Claire, WI; great grandchildren, Emily, Henry, and Annika Larson; and several nieces and nephews.

Per his wishes, no service will be held.  Enjoy a quiet walk through the woods in his memory.
