Dr. Bruce Robert Thomas, age 81, of St. Paul, MN passed away on May 21, 2025. Bruce was born September 14,1943 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, the son of Bernard R. and Elsie C. (Sigfrinius) Thomas. Bruce was raised in Marble and graduated from Greenway High School. His education culminated in a doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Dr. Thomas dedicated over fifty years to the field of education, as both a teacher and an administrator. He started his career as a student teacher in Grand Rapids, eventually moving on to Park High School, in Cottage Grove, where he excelled as a Department Head and Assistant Principal. While working at Park, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Lea Johnson. Bruce and Dorothy raised a family of four children: John, Edward, David, and Allison.

Throughout his impressive career, he was the superintendent of five Minnesota school districts. In 2000, Bruce retired from St. Cloud Public Schools, however, he continued working for several educational institutions. In November 2013, Bruce was selected to be the interim superintendent of Grand Rapids Area Schools. When the school year ended, the School Board asked him to stay.  He remained there another three years, finishing his career right where it began. Bruce and Dorothy enjoyed their retirement years spending time at the lake home in Balsam Township and wintering in Florida.

Above all else, Bruce loved his family. Spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren was his most treasured pastime. He adored his wife of 53 years and provided unconditional love and support to his children. His three granddaughters held a very special place in his heart. Bruce had an unmatched sense of humor and infectious energy. He was a man of great principle and integrity. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.

Bruce is survived by his children, John (Mora) Thomas, Edward Thomas, and Allison Thomas (Taylor Paulseth); grandchildren, Sophie, Isabella, and Claire; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Nancy Thomas; sisters-in-law, Kathy (Darryl) Kowitz, Karen (Nathan) Engevik and Bonnie Johnson; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy, in 2024; his son, David, in 2018; parents; and his brother-in-law, Jim Johnson.

Visitation will be held 5-8 PM Friday, May 30th at Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, MN.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM, Saturday, May 31st at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Coleraine, MN, with visitation beginning at 10 AM.  Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Coleraine.
