Carl Alvin Hanson, a long resident of River Grand Assisted Living, died on January 16, 2024, at the age of 91.

Carl was born on June 21, 1932, in Rochester, Minnesota, the eldest son of Carl Frederick and Gladys Irene (Weiss) Hanson. The family moved to Grand Rapids, when Carl's father took a job with the Greenway Mines in the 1940's. Carl's mother worked as a registered nurse with Itasca Memorial Hospital. Carl joined the Minnesota National Guard, Company D, 136th Infantry Regiment, 47th Division and was later inducted into the regular army because of the Korean conflict. Carl served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged.

Carl married Dolores "Dodie" Patricia Allen on May 23, 1953. For his lifetime, he would tell everyone how beautiful the love of his life was. Carl worked for Blandin Paper Company in Quality Control. He and Dodie had four children. They were active in Zion Lutheran Church and later in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. Carl enjoyed his early morning coffee group at McDonalds. He also enjoyed daily walks with his furry friend, dog Shosty, at the VFW park. Carl did handloading ammunition as a hobby in his garage. Carl enjoyed telling stories of his youth and sharing corny jokes.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, and his stillborn son Brian Daniel.

Carl is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dolores Hanson; his children, Bradley (Susan) Hanson, Steven Hanson, and Jennifer (Andy) Heintz; three grandchildren, Emily (Ben) Beyer, Matthew Hanson, and Sadie Hanson; and one great-granddaughter, Finley. Carl is also survived by his brothers Howard (Judith) Hanson and Gordon (Elaine) Hanson and his nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank River Grand and the Essentia Hospice teams for their care and support.

Visitation will be Friday, January 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, MN followed by the 11:00 AM funeral service. Burial will be at Itasca-Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MN with full military honors.
