Carol Elizabeth (Peterson) Thorson Bernhardt, age 93, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024, at the Autumn Lane Assisted Living in Cohasset, MN. Carol was born November 30, 1930, to Elmer and Lydia (Miller) Peterson in Minneapolis, MN. Growing up in Minneapolis, Carol graduated from Southwest High School in 1948. She worked at Dayton's department store and briefly attended the University of Minnesota. It was there she met James Thorson, whom she married in 1952, and they established their home in Richfield. Despite the sudden loss of James in 1959, Carol's indomitable spirit shone through as she navigated the challenges of raising three children with grace and strength. She credits her success to the invaluable support of her dear friend, Eloise (Milton) Festa.

In 1961, Carol's path crossed with Robert A. Bernhardt, and they embarked on a journey together, blending their families and welcoming one child of their own. In July of 1975, they moved their family to Grand Rapids to follow Robert's career as a pipefitter. Carol worked for a time at the First Grade restaurant in the historic Central School. Throughout her life, Carol found joy in her passion for singing, nurtured by her father who provided voice lessons and helped her produce records. Beyond her musical talents, Carol's warmth extended to her family, friends, and community. She delighted in traveling, baking, and cooking, and her home was often filled with the laughter of friendly competition over games like dominoes, rummikub, and bridge. Carol's generosity knew no bounds as she offered unwavering support and comfort to those in need.

Despite the hardships she faced, Carol's spirit remained unbroken. Her strong faith served as a guiding light, illuminating even the darkest of days. Her optimism, coupled with her infectious sense of humor, brought joy to all who knew her. Until her last breath, Carol's laughter echoed through the halls, a testament to her vibrant spirit.

Active in her community, Carol founded the Grand Rapids Chapter of the Red Hat Society, embracing camaraderie and friendship. A devoted member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, she enriched the lives of many through her involvement and dedication.

In the hearts of those who knew her, Carol remains a glittering jewel—a cherished memory of love, laughter, and boundless generosity. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion, a testament to a life well-lived.

Carol is survived by daughters: Elizabeth (Peter) Twedten, Apple Valley, MN; Debra (Tim) Howg, Grand Rapids, MN; sons: James (Loretta) Thorson, Scandia, MN; Mark Thorson, Bloomington, MN; step-son: Glen Bernhardt (Marie Renwald) Brimley, MI; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: James A. Thorson and Robert A. Bernhardt; step-children: Alan, Hugh, and Sally Bernhardt; and brothers: Vernon and Tom Peterson.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cohasset, MN. Visitation will begin at the church one hour prior. Interment will be at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Columbarium.
