Carolyn Haig, age 95, of Grand Rapids, MN passed away peacefully Monday, June 22, 2026 at Garden Court Chateau Care Center surrounded by her family.

Carolyn Helen Haig was born August 22, 1930 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Helen Juanita (Sloan) Haider and Martin John Haider.  She grew up on the family farm and had the responsibility of maintaining the henhouse and gathering all the eggs. On June 24, 1950, Carol married William Foote Haig in Duluth after meeting him at her sister's wedding while she was washing dishes.  Bill knew the minute he saw her; she would be his wife and soulmate.  Because of Bill's job with MN Power, they made their home in Duluth, then Hoyt Lakes, MN before settling in Grand Rapids in 1958.

Together, Carol and Bill raised a family of six – three daughters and three sons! Her children remember with fondness, being allowed to go barefooted all summer long, being taught how to climb up trees by their mom, and a love and appreciation for being outdoors.  Family camping was always an adventure their entire family loved!  At the campsite, Carol had a tradition of making a large kettle of her special spaghetti sauce that would take 3-4 days to make and after the long wait, everyone enjoyed spaghetti for supper.

Carol was always a caregiver to everyone.  She also used those skills while she worked as certified nursing assistant in the Grand Rapids Hospital.  Her kindness and daily living created a great example for her family to live by – a strong Christian faith and love for the Lord, her devotion to her husband and children, and her willingness to help anyone in need with a meal or sometimes opening their home for people who needed a place to stay. She loved to bake and is fondly remembered for her amazing Christmas cookies – Spritz, Special Chocolate Chip cookies and her Date Filled cookies.

Playing SCRABBLE was one of her favorite indoor pastimes! As a competitive player, she could earn points creating words that she was not sure existed.  500 was a favorite card game to play when she and her sisters got together.  Carol would always win with the hand of cards she was dealt.  Being a pet lover, Carol and Bill had several dogs and recently her cat, Angel became part of their family.

Following Bill's retirement, they enjoyed cross country skiing and hiking along the North Shore, family camping trips with their children and growing families, wild ricing, traveling out West in their motor home and long walks with each other in the woods.

Preceded in death by her husband, William F. Haig, Sr. in 2019; two grandchildren, Heather Pierce and Tom Saeland; her parents; sisters, Audrey Ferguson and Dorothy Brown; and brothers, Gerald Haider, Marty Haider, Norman Haider and John Haider.

Carol will be deeply missed by her six children, Terry Lea, Cathy (Mike) Brown, Peggy (Mike) Krook, William Jr. (Teri) Haig, Michael Haig, and Daniel Robert Haig; 14 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Patsy Steck and Peggy Pickar: many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Carol's family would like to thank the staff at Garden Court Chateau and the Moments Hospice Team for their caregiving and kindness that was shown to their mother in the last months of her life.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 2, 2026 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM until the time of mass.  Father Blake Rozier will preside at the mass. Interment will be at a later time in Itasca Calvary Cemetery.
