Darrell L.
Sampson
d. May 16, 2026
Grand Rapids
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Darrell Lee Sampson, beloved father and grandfather. Darrell was born on July 12th, 1950, and left this earth to be reunited with his parents on May 16th, 2026. He is deeply missed.
Darrell spent the first years of his life in Effie, MN where his parents owned the local general store. They moved to Grand Rapids in the early 60s, and he graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1968. He continued his education at Bemidji State University where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology, and then a Master's in education. He then went on to earn his Principal Certification. He started teaching in 1973 and quickly became a favorite teacher to many kids. He believed that learning needed to be fun and knew if he wasn't having fun, the kids weren't either. They could often be found studying outdoors, and for many years he took groups of kids on annual canoe trips to the Boundary Waters.
In 1976, Darrell and his wife Sandy welcomed twin boys who immediately became the center of his universe. He shared his love of nature with them, spending innumerable hours hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling, which produced lasting memories and fun stories to tell. A few of those stories involved his fondness for a good fire. He had a bit of a history with the local fire department, and we never missed a chance to give him grief for it. He was always good humored, just like his dad, and he passed that on to his sons and his grandson.
He was a lover of animals and had many dogs throughout his life. He thoroughly enjoyed having his Orange Cat and his grand dogs around to keep him entertained in his later years. He spent the rest of his time observing all of the wildlife that traversed his property every day. He was constantly in awe of the beauty in the world and his faith in God was strengthened by it.
If Darrell had to be described in one word, it would be generous. Generous in love, compassion, humor, knowledge, curiosity, and food. Sharing a good meal with his friends and family was a favorite pastime for him. We will miss his stories and shenanigans, and most of all we will miss his big, loving hugs.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Selvin and Billie Jean Sampson; uncle, Curtis Sampson; and nephew, Kirk Sampson.
He is survived by his two sons, Joel (BillieJo) Sampson and Jason (Bobbi) Sampson; his grandson, Ezra Sampson; two brothers, Bruce (Bev) Sampson and Ron (Gayle) Sampson, friend and mother of his children, Sandra Sampson; nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
A private family service will be held at a later date to be determined.
Arrangements are with Rowe Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Grand Rapids, MN. To sign the online guestbook or send condolences visit www.rowefuneralhomeandcrematory.com.
