David L. Nichols, age 74, of Grand Rapids, MN died Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Americare Lodges, in Grand Rapids, MN, surrounded by family.

David "Newt" was born to Dale and Elizabeth "Bette" Nichols in Bertha, MN in 1951 and spent his childhood growing up in Brainerd, MN. He graduated from Brainerd High School, carrying with him the strong values and work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. After high school, Dave moved to Grand Rapids, MN where he met Debbie "Red" Trembath. The two were united in marriage on May 11, 1974, beginning a loving partnership of 37 years. Together, they raised their three children and built a life rooted in family, love and care for others.

Dave was a flooring contractor by trade, but his impact reached far beyond his work. Dave was especially passionate about his involvement with the local Special Olympics program. For more than 20 years, he dedicated his time as a coach, finding true joy in working with the athletes. Their enthusiasm, determination, and successes meant the world to him, and he took great pride in being part of their journeys. After the passing of his wife, Red, it was also through Special Olympics that Dave was lucky enough to find love again. He shared his remaining years with Lori Dvorak, and together they enjoyed companionship, laughter and many cherished moments.

Dave was a loving father and devoted grandpa. He treasured every moment he spent with his grandchildren and loved caring for them whenever he had the chance. Dave enjoyed the outdoors with some of his favorite times spent fishing, hunting and camping at Deer Lake Campground on Winnie with family and friends. He loved sitting around the campfire, listening to music or the Minnesota Twins, sharing stories and laughs with a Hamm's in his hand.

Dave will be remembered for his generous heart, steady presence, and the quiet ways he showed up for the people and community he loved. His legacy lives through his family, the countless lives he touched, and the many athletes who were fortunate to have him cheering them on.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Red.

He is survived by his son, Nathan Nichols; daughters, Stephanie Nichols, Danielle (Brian) Aronson; significant other, Lori Dvorak; sister, Claudia Campbell; brothers, Charles (Eileen) Nichols, Dana (Marie) Nichols, Kevin Nichols; grandchildren, Elliott and Beckett Aronson; Lori's son, Jeremy (Jennie) Kortekaas and his children, Tatum (Billy Johannsen) and Brye Kortekaas; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday, January 16, 2026, at 10:00AM at Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, MN followed by the 11:00AM memorial service. A celebration of Dave's life will continue at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1176 S Pokegama Ave, Grand Rapids, MN following the service.
