Gene Smith, 71, died Sunday July 20th in his home in Balsam Township, surrounded by family. He retired from a long career in healthcare management in 2018.

Gene was born in Hibbing, MN.  His family moved to Duluth when he was quite young. Gene was a 1972 graduate of Duluth East High School, where he played football and ice hockey.  He went on to earn a degree in Respiratory Therapy from The College of St. Scholastica, where he also played goalie on the first men's ice hockey team there.

Hunting and fishing were two of Gene's greatest passions, pursuits that took him across the country in search of adventure. Among his favorite places were the peaceful Northwoods of Minnesota and Suttle, Alabama—both of which became the backdrop to many enduring friendships and cherished memories.

Gene spent much of his adult life in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was a proud and loyal fan of the Crimson Tide. In retirement, he returned to the tranquility of the Northwoods of Minnesota, finding comfort and joy in the natural beauty that surrounded his cabin.

Known for his larger-than-life heart and an equally booming laugh, Gene left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His warmth, spirit, and stories will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles V. Smith and Viola Smith (nee Matteson) Mehelich, and his brother Charles V. Smith III.

Gene is survived by his wife of 22 years, Michelle, and his children Tyler (Breanna) of Heber Springs Arkansas, Justin of Birmingham, Alabama and Haley (Jonathan Bunio), also of Birmingham, and 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Glenn (Wendy) of Wyoming, MN and Ed (the late Debra) of Duluth, MN.

A service for close family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 24th, at the family property. In honor of Gene's wishes, donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Balsam Fire Department, c/o Michelle Smith, 45001 Scenic Highway 7, Bovey, MN 55709.
