Gale Benzing LeCompte, age 90, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the Garden Court Chateau in Grand Rapids, MN.
Gale was born in 1934 in Grand Rapids, MN, to Samuel and Irene Benzing. She graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1952 and spent one year at St. Scholastica. Gale graduated from the University of Nevada-Reno in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Psychology and finished her Masters in Experimental/Physiological Psychology in 1974. She worked for Central Washington University for eight years and in 1985 she returned to Grand Rapids, MN. She worked as a nurse for several years and wrote for the Grand Rapids Hearld Review. Gale was active in numerous activities, served on The Cancer Society board, the MacRostie Arts Center Board, and numerous other task forces, focus groups and committees. Her true point of pride was the Empty Bowls project – fund raising for the local food shelf programs. She enjoyed music, modern dance, ceramics/pottery, photography, and watercolor painting. Her passion was writing fun things and gardening when she had the time.
Gale is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Sammy Benzing; and sister, Barbara Lanum. She is survived by her sister, Vicki Andrews; foster sons, George LeCompte, and John LeCompte; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM, Monday, June 17, 2024, at Rowe Funeral Home with a gathering of family and friends beginning at 10 AM. Mary Shideler will lead this service.
