Gerald W. Hecht, age 86, of Cohasset, MN, died Monday, November 18, 2024, at Majestic Pines Assisted Living, Grand Rapids, MN.

Gerald was born in 1938 in St. Paul, MN to Jesse and Mary (Burshtin) Hecht where he grew up and attended school. Gerald attended the University of Minnesota and earned his bachelor's degree in forestry. Gerald and Joan Flaherty were united in marriage in 1962 and Gerald soon after enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed in Fort Carson, CO. After his discharge, he returned to Minnesota and worked for the DNR. His job with the DNR moved Gerald and Joan many times within the state until the last move settled them in Cohasset in 1978. Gerald and Joan spent the remaining years raising their children, Rebecca and Daniel, at their home on Bass Lake. Gerald retired from the DNR in 2000.

Gerald was very career focused. He was passionate about forest health and tree disease and would take photos from airplanes to learn about state forest land. He also belonged to the North Star Shrine Cycle Patrol for many years. Gerald loved reading, college football, Grand Rapids Hockey, and watched too much news. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending events they were involved in.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sandra Flaherty. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan; daughter, Rebecca (David) Pierret; son, Daniel (Jennifer) Hecht; two granddaughters, Maija and Sarah Hecht; and his dog, Buddy.

In lieu of flowers, a tree planted in Gerald's memory is preferred.
