Obituary

Herbert "Red" Cusey, age 93, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at Grand Itasca Hospital.

Red was born on the family farm in 1930, to Raymond and Hazel Cusey in Dent, Minnesota. He grew up in Detroit Lakes, attended area schools, excelled in sports, and later graduating high school. After high school, he enlisted into the National Guard and was called to active-duty service where he served during the Korean Conflict, serving for three years. The Army is where he found his love of cooking. Upon discharge, Red attended culinary school in Portland, Oregon, and then worked various jobs across the country. He was working as a cook in Minot, North Dakota, where he met the love of his life, Rebecca "Becky". The couple was united in marriage on November 30, 1957. The couple moved around a lot, depending on Red's job, finally settling in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1973. Red started working at the Rainbow, Quadna, and finishing his cooking career at the Sawmill Inn, where he worked until he was 80.

Red was a 50-year member at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, as well as a member of The Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Post 60. He loved to talk sports and cook, sharing meals and laughter with everyone he met. Red spent most of his time volunteering at St. Joseph's, Knights of Columbus, and Faith Formation, where he was always cooking. He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.

Red is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Jean Joslin, Lois Nelson, and Althea Thiessen; infant brother, Spencer; and infant grandson, TJ Cusey. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Becky; sons, Terry, Timothy (Cathy), Todd (Liz), Thomas (Becky), and Troy (Ingrid); brothers, Rodney (Mary), Ralph, Howard, Darrell, and William; sister, Phyllis; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Thursday, November 9, 2023, beginning at 5:00 PM and lasting until the 7:00 PM Rosary by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will resume on Friday, November 10, 2023, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 10:00 AM and lasting until the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial. Military Honors will be performed by Grand Rapids Area Veterans and burial at Fort Snelling at a later date. Father Blake Rozier will officiate.

Red's family wishes to extend a special thank you to Nurse Shannon, at Grand Itasca Hospital, who was by his side for most of his stay there.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Joseph's Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society is preferred.
