James (Jim) Axel Wicklund, age 89 of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Majestic Pines, MN.

James was born in 1935 to John and Agda Wicklund in Jessie Lake, MN.  He attended Deer River High School, graduating in 1953. Jim met Shirley Johnston one evening at the local roller rink. They married on May 12, 1956, in Effie, MN. The couple moved closer to the cities where Jim worked for Clark's Ironing Board factory and Long Lake Engine Rebuilders while living in Mound, MN. The couple was blessed with five children. In 1966 the family moved to Grand Rapids, where Jim worked as a machinist for NAPA and drove school bus for ISD318 for over 45 years. He was known as the best machinist in town.

Jim had a knack for tinkering and fixing things. He built engines for the local stock car racers and was even named Mechanic of the Year.  Jim loved to deer hunt, camp, and travel with his family. He was a devoted husband and partner to Shirley for 68 years, making every decision together. Jim enjoyed trips to South Africa both for visiting his daughter and helping construct a library. Jim was a quiet man with a huge heart and passion for serving the Lord through his church, others, and his family.

Jim was a member of the Gideon's, Faith Baptist Church, and then Grace Bible Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Wicklund; grand daughter Laura Nielson; and eight siblings. James is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Bruce (Sue) Wicklund, Marie (Marv) Bjorklund, Greg (Darlene) Wicklund, Jill (Jim) Hachey; sisters, Evie, Mae, Karin, Carol; 9 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

A visitation will be Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at Grace Bible Church beginning at 10:00 AM lasting until the 11:00 funeral service. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery in Talmoon, MN. Rev. Greg Rhodea will officiate.
