John Richard Mornes, age 74, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2025 at his home.

John was born in 1951 to John L. and Martha Mornes, one of eight children.  He grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1969. He attended Brainerd Area Vocational Tech school, graduating in 1975 with a certificate in Natural Resources. John graduated from Concordia College in St. Paul with a Bachelor of Arts in 1979.  John also attended Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis, MO graduating in 1987, and became an ordained Lutheran Minister and teacher. Eventually he spent many years in carpentry.

He enjoyed being outdoors, canoeing in the Boundary Waters, hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles, and traveling. John loved doing genealogy, incredibly proud that he had traced his family back to the sixth century.

John was an optimistic person who had a great sense of humor and enjoyed socializing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Darlene. John is survived by his siblings, Donna (Bob) Huffer, Joanne (David) Micheletti, Daniel Mornes, Donald Mornes, Mary Mornes and David (Amber) Mornes; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at First Church of God, Grand Rapids, beginning at 10:00 AM and lasting until the 11:00 funeral service. Burial will be at Harris Cemetery; Pastor Dale Steele will officiate.
