John Coleman Peters, age 68, of Cohasset, MN, passed away at his home in Cohasset, Wednesday, February 7, 2024.

John was born in Redfield, SD in 1955 to Karlton and Catherine Peters. When his parents moved the family to Detroit Lakes, JP was sure East Shore Drive must be heaven with the boats, water skis, and sunshine. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1973 and served in the United States Marine Corps. On the 11th of May in the year of our Lord 1974, John was united in marriage to Denise Piche. John and Denise owned and operated Washington Grocery in Detroit Lakes, MN from 1977 until 1992, and then the Red Willow in Grand Rapids, MN. He also owned and operated Lakeside Bar and Restaurant in Detroit Lakes, MN in the early 1980s. A lover of liquor drinks and cigarette smoke, John's interests included snowmobiling, bingo, boating, cooking, and bloody mary breakfast with the family. John was as passionate a human as you will find. Involved in his sons' youth sports, John coached hockey and baseball, influencing a generation of boys to be "bigger, faster, stronger" and hopefully better men for the experience. JP still never got to see the Vikings win a Superbowl.

John is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Denise. He is survived by his sons, Max (Nicole) Peters of Cohasset, MN, Marcus (Amy) Peters of Grand Forks, ND, and Lucas (Aimee Ross) Peters of Cohasset, MN; sisters, Dorothy (Donald) Enockson of White Bear Lake, MN, and Joan Peters of Mooresville, NC; brother, James (Julie) Peters of Perham, MN; five grandchildren, Ava, Mia, Jordan, Carson and Makayla; and many nieces and nephews.

We will remember JP for his many JP-isms including: "be young, have fun", "if you can't be good, be safe", "it takes a lifetime to live a lifetime", and "hardly love you at all".  Hardly love you at all JP, godspeed.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, March 1st from 4-7pm at the Timberlake Hotel in Grand Rapids, MN.
