Leland "Lee" Paul Griess , age 74, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away Friday, April 5, 2024 at Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital, Grand Rapids. Leland was born on June 1, 1949, to Leland and Corrine (Linder) Griess in Alexandria, MN. He moved to Williston, ND as a young boy and moved to Grand Rapids in the 1960's. After graduating from GRHS, he proudly served his nation in the US Navy, stationed in Guam and aboard the USS Coral Sea Aircraft Carrier during the Vietnam War Era. Upon his honorable discharge, Lee returned to Grand Rapids where he met Marcy Oberfoell. They were married on April 28, 1973, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grand Rapids. Leland was a natural-born carpenter, learning the trade from his father when he was old enough to swing a hammer. He crafted homes across the Midwest, Montana, and Florida, earning a reputation for excellence that echoed far and wide.

He found camaraderie and community in the Sons of Munich and looked forward to the annual gathering with enthusiasm. He also loved shooting pool with his buddies and especially enjoyed spending time in nature. Whether casting his line into tranquil waters, tracking game through the woods, collecting rocks and agates, or harvesting syrup from maple trees, he found solace in the simplicity of life's offerings. Among his most treasured moments were those spent in the company of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, offering steadfast encouragement and affection as he was present in moments both big and small.

Lee exuded a calm and patient demeanor, offering a sense of ease to those around him. His love was unconditional, extending naturally to everyone he encountered, and his friendly nature effortlessly attracted new friendships. Always available to lend a hand without hesitation, Lee's helpfulness was as consistent as his gentle character. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Lee is survived by Marcy Griess; children, Camille (Phillip) Gerber and Paul (Lindsay) Griess-Schultz; grandchildren: Haley (Josh) Orr, EmmaLee (Colton) Rabey, Lane Gerber, Hunter Gerber, Callee Gerber, Brooklyn Schultz, and Sophia Schultz; great-grandchildren, Rayna Rabey and Lyla Gerber; sisters: Geneva Potepan, Bonnie Rae, and Connie (Don) Moll; and many nieces and nephews.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David Hanson.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 AM on Friday, April 12, 2024, at Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids with visitation beginning one hour prior. Fr. Blake Rozier, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Itasca-Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids.
