Linda L.
Undem
d. Dec 29, 2025
Grand Rapids
Linda L. Undem, age 76, of Grand Rapids, MN passed away Monday, December 29, 2025 at her home.
Linda was born on February 22, 1949, to Ethel and Henry Masteller in Glenwood, Minnesota. She grew up poor, barefoot and proud. Her life was full of adventure with her sister and best friend for life, Mary. They were happy and free children. Gone from sunup to sundown on escapades which to this day remain largely confidential. They wandered the woods and the hills of the neighborhood. They played softball with neighbor kids. They built forts. They played house (Mary always had to be the "Mom" and Linda got to be the "Dad"). They were the only children allowed to fish from the "bachelor's dock" which irritated other children in the neighborhood to no end. Linda lost her father at the age of 9 and was then raised with her sisters and brother by her mother, Ethel, alone. Ethel was one of the toughest, hardest working, loving and caring women who ever lived…traits she passed fully to her daughters. At age 14, for the first time, Linda lived in a home with running water. Poor, barefoot and proud. Linda said it was the best childhood anyone ever had.
At 16 Linda became the mother to her beautiful little girl, Lisa, and several years later to a son, Todd. Life was hard for them. Linda worked hard to support her family. Fortunately, her mother and sister, Mary, were with her every step of the way. Still poor, still proud, but now wearing shoes she was the best mom ever.
In 1976, while working as a waitress at the Country Kitchen in Alexandria, Minnesota, she met her soulmate and future husband, John. She saw something in him that many others did not and she loved him completely. So, with a 1964 Impala that barely ran and an old motorcycle they started on an adventure that lasted 49 years.
They added sons Christopher and Michael to the family. Together they built a legacy of love and family: 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Linda's patience, understanding and ferocious, unconditional and utterly complete love of her family guided us and led us through everything.
On Friday, December 26th Linda started Hospice. That evening our family gathered at our home for our Christmas celebration. Linda got to spend time with all of her children and grandchildren on Friday and Saturday, it was the most wonderful and blessed Christmas celebration ever. On Sunday morning she slipped into a coma and Monday evening, surrounded by all she loved she took her last breath. She is at peace.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ethel, sisters, JoAnn and Carol and brother Donnie.
Linda is survived by her husband, John; children Lisa (Scott) Arndt, Todd Crouse, Christopher and Michael (Cristin); grandchildren Corey, Troy, Cody, Sophia, Olivia and Ira; and great grandchildren, Josephine, Dahlia, Annabelle and Rylee; and sister and best friend for life, Mary.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church, Grand Rapids with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 AM at the church. Rev. Rhonda Ruder will officiate.
