Lonnie Ray Lyman, age 84, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Homestead Nursing Home in Deer River, Minnesota.
Lonnie was born on July 20, 1939, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Lonnie graduated with the Class of 1957 from Grand Rapids High School. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed on the USS Midway as an Aircraft Handling Officer. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and attended Bemidji State College. Lonnie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree (Industrial Technology). He moved to Silver Bay, Minnesota and began working for Reserve Mining Company. Lonnie eventually moved back to Grand Rapids where he worked for Bovey Mercantile. After leaving Bovey Mercantile he was offered a job at Blandin Paper Company as a draftsman. He retired from Blandin Paper Company and worked part time for the U.S. Forest Service as a Forest Protection Officer for the campgrounds at Cut Foot Sioux and Cass Lake.
Lonnie was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed going fishing every spring with family members at Cut Foot Sioux, duck hunting on White Oak Lake, deer hunting near the family cabin and ice fishing on Pokegama Lake. Lonnie was a master woodcrafter, and his most challenging project was a 16-foot wooden canoe.
Lonnie will be deeply missed by his wife of 30 years Rose; two sons Peter (Cindy) Lyman and Jeff Lyman; two step children Stacey (Mike) Mager and Scott Korpi; five step grandchildren Chad (Becky) Mager, Sara Mager, Emily Mager, Gunner (Leticia) Korpi, Gage (Megan) Korpi; four step great grandchildren; brother Bob (Jill) Lyman Lusche; sisters Mary (Gordon) Allen and Alice (Dan) Larson. Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Florence Lyman, and two infant siblings.
The Lyman family would like to thank the staff at Homestead Nursing Home for their compassionate care over the past five years for Lonnie. He will be remembered for his great stories and would always say at the dinner table, "a powerful engine needs plenty of fuel!".
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, MN with a memorial service to follow at 5:00 PM. Reverend Len Palkki will officiate. Military honors will be rendered following the service.
