Obituary

Marilyn Ann Akre, 89, of Grand Rapids, MN entered eternal life on 12/22/2023 surrounded by family.

Marilyn is survived by her four children: Vicki (Bill) Norton, Kathleen (Jim) Desnoyers, Joseph (Susan) Akre and Michelle (Todd) Brown.

She is also survived by her sisters; Margaret (Peggy) Stabe, Barbara (Ron) Card, and Kaye (Duane) Mattson.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Gary Akre; parents Leo and Margaret (LaCroix) Miller, her brothers, William (Bill) Miller, Richard (Dick) Miller, her sister Sharon (Miller) Boies and her great grandson Theodore Akre.

She was blessed with 16 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

Marilyn was employed by the United States Post Office for 25 years, becoming one of the first women hired in the Grand Rapids office. In celebration of her retirement, she completed her mail route in a chauffeured limousine.

Marilyn, along with Gary, shared many adventures at their cabin in northern Minnesota in pursuit of grouse, berries, and princess pine. The boughs collected were fashioned into Christmas wreaths to adorn the doors of loved one's homes. Her raspberry jam and knitted mittens were highly anticipated among the grand and great-grandchildren. Provoking rounds of "Yay! Grandma Akre Jelly!" whenever a jar was opened. Her love of quilting led to the creation of hand stitched quilts for each family member and the arrival of new grandchildren. In essence, she wrapped her family in love. Marilyn was an avid and enthusiastic MN Wild and Vikings Fan. Her optimism never wavering throughout each season. Her belief in her sports teams culminated in the purchase of a sports package when she wintered in her Florida home, thereby ensuring she would not miss a game.

Throughout her accomplishments in life, Marilyn was immensely proud of her family and leaves behind beautiful memories.

A celebration of life will be held on May 17, 2024, commencing at 11 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, MN. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
