Mark Russell Smith, age 66 passed away Thursday May 21st, 2026. He was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and lived and worked in Warroad, Minnesota. Mark was doing what he loved most, riding his motorcycle, when he collided with a deer and was taken to his heavenly home. He was a 60-year dirt bike/motorcycle enthusiast and experienced rider, small engine mechanic, and longtime lover of putzing around in the garage. Mark worked doing custodial/maintenance for the Warroad School and retired in January 2026. Mark loved being at the dirt bike track. As a former dirt bike racer himself, he was always watching out for everyone's safety at the track, working as a race day flagger for many years. He was a beloved husband, father, foster dad, grandpa and friend.
Mark is survived by his wife of 21 years, Laurie; 6 sons: Randy, Scott (Danielle) and Curtis Smith, Andrew (Leah) and Tim Rasmusson, Christian Higgins; 3 daughters: Rachel (Jake) Sivertson, Reanna Smith, and Izzy Clark; as well as many foster kids. He is also survived by his many grandchildren: Janise, Trent, and Tucker Smith. Grace, Olivia and Reed Rasmusson, Adalyn and Alaina Sivertson; as well as his brother, Dean Smith and sisters, Lylas Douglas, LuAnn (Jim) Grover, and Beth Palkki.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald Sheldon Smith and Doris Fay Smith; children, Peter and Rebekah Smith; and grandson, Trey Rasmusson. Also preceded in death by his brothers, Donald and Lee Smith and sister, Kathy (Jim) Quiel.
A funeral will be held for Mark at the Woodland Bible Church in Warroad, MN on Saturday, May 30th, 2026 at 11 am. Internment at Hazelwood Cemetery will be held at 11 am on July 25th, 2026 with a Celebration on Life to follow at the Blackberry Town Hall in Blackberry, MN.
