Marven Ellsworth Grina peacefully passed away on Friday, February 14, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He will be remembered for his joy in teaching, love of sports and his many miles walked with his wife.

Marven was born August 3, 1932, to Melvin and Helma (Sundre) Grina of Northwood, North Dakota. He attended and graduated from Northwood Public Schools in May 1950. In 1954 he graduated from Mayville State Teachers College. While at college he met and fell in love with Beryl Symington. They were engaged on February 13 and married August 4, 1954, in Neche, ND. After marrying, Marven served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 in Germany. Upon returning, he began his teaching career in Rolla, North Dakota where he taught high school math and physics. In 1960, following graduate studies at the University of North Dakota, he accepted a new position in Grand Rapids, Minnesota teaching 8th grade math. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1994. They raised their family there and were active in the United Methodist Church. After retirement, Marv and Beryl spent the winter months at Venture Out in Mesa, AZ and returned home to MN each spring & summer. They loved to travel and visited all 50 states and 16 countries. Marv enjoyed fishing, camping with family and annual trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. After retiring, he loved doing projects in the woodshop – including making personalized pens, cooking and making lefse and flatbread.  He loved and was so proud of his 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

From 2021 to 2025, Marven lived at Majestic Pines Assisted Living.

Marven is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Beryl Grina, parents, and siblings Mildred (HR) McKenzie, and Elaine (Peter) Sandbeck. Marven is survived by children Leslie (Larry) Babb, Dana (Sandy) Grina, Todd (Lisa) Grina, Mark (Gail) Grina; grandchildren Kirsten & Michelle Babb, Tyler & Brett Grina, Tanner (McKensie) Grina, Nissa (Max) Brekke, Bjorn (Weily) Grina-Shay, Erik Grina; great grandchildren Elliya & Kaia Grina-Shay, Henry Grina;  sisters-in-law Barbara Symington, Ila Symington and many nieces and nephews; and Renate Schaufelberger Martin, AFS exchange student 1975-76, Kandern, Germany.

The family would like to thank the staff at Majestic Pines for the kind and compassionate care he received.

A celebration of life service will be held on March 22, 2025, with visitation at 12:00PM at Grand Rapids United Methodist Church followed by the memorial service at 1:00PM. Interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with full military honors.  Memorials may be sent to the United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids, MN.
