Melanie Dawn Heikkila

Melanie Dawn (Westlake) Heikkila, 66, of Suomi, Minnesota, passed away at home on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, after a brief illness, with her husband, Daniel, holding her hand and her daughter Tiffany by her side.

Melanie was born July 21, 1960, in Fosston, Minnesota, to Orville “Ole” Westlake and Joy Christine Paulley. She grew up in Coleraine in a large family. Some of her happiest childhood memories were spent baking alongside her beloved Grandma Nora, beginning a lifelong love of cooking for the people she loved.

In 1988, Melanie needed help fixing her car. A mutual friend sent Daniel James Heikkila, and that simple introduction changed both of their lives. Melanie had three daughters, Amy, Tiffany, and Sarah, and Daniel became Dad to all three.

In 1991, Daniel brought Melanie and the girls to Suomi, where they built their home and life together. Their life was simple but full of family, camping, road trips, boat rides, and quiet time together at home in the woods.

After 14 years together, Melanie decided it was finally time to get married. On Tuesday, August 13, 2002, she woke Daniel up and told him they were going to the courthouse. With no witnesses arranged, they recruited their daughter Amy and a janitor. The story became a family favorite and inspired the phrase, “Only on Tuesday.”

Melanie married Daniel on a Tuesday, and 24 years later, she died on a Tuesday. They shared more than 38 years together. Even near the end of her life, when confusion had set in, Melanie still lit up when she saw him.

Melanie spent more than 30 years working at Bigfork Valley, caring for people with compassion and dignity. She finished her career as an Assisted Living Coordinator, a position she worked hard to earn and was very proud of.

But caring for people was never just Melanie’s job. If someone needed food, clothes, a ride, money, help with funeral arrangements, or simply someone to show up, Melanie was there. Her daughters learned from her to work hard, be kind, sacrifice for others, and take care of the people around them.

She loved her daughters fiercely, but being Grandma brought her tremendous joy. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attended their activities, cooked their favorite foods, baked cookies, spoiled them, and made sure they always knew how happy she was to see them.

Melanie was an exceptional cook, and her family will especially miss her potato soup, fried chicken, porcupine meatballs, French toast, chocolate chip cookies, and legendary turkey dinners. She also loved plain black Folgers coffee, shopping, word games, family keepsakes, and being home with her family.

She was loving, outgoing, gentle, hardworking, tough as nails, and famously clumsy, with a big laugh and a gift for making people feel important.

Melanie was especially close to her mother, Joy. During her final days, she said she wanted to “go home to Grandma Joy.” Her family finds comfort in believing she did.

During the final month of Melanie’s life, Tiffany remained closely by her side and played an extraordinary role in caring for her. Melanie was eventually able to return home to Suomi, surrounded by her family. After a lifetime spent caring for everyone else, her family had the privilege of caring for her.

Melanie is survived by her husband, Daniel James Heikkila; daughters Amy Joy (Jeff) Wood, Tiffany Ann (Willy) Heikkila, and Sarah Dawn (Ibrahem) Heikkila; grandchildren Anna, Felecia, Jeffrey, Emmett, Isaac, Blake, William, Bella, Teija, and Kai; and great-grandchildren Spencer and Elena.

She is also survived by her siblings, Davey (Mary) Renollet, Mike (MaryJo) Westlake, Sue (Bob) McClelland, Kim (Rich) Helgren, Bonnie Renollet, Tony (Robin) Renollet, Doug (Patty) Renollet, Ken (Chris) Renollet, Patti Seaberg, Charlotte Blom, Tommy (Maria) Paulley, Tammy (Tim) Allain, and Loretta (Gary) Persig, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville “Ole” Westlake and Joy Paulley; stepmother Betty Westlake; stepfather Tom Paulley; brothers John (Deb) Westlake, Dave Westlake, and Amos Renollet; nephews Cody Allain and Tristan Westlake; nieces Amanda Persig and Randi Ahlstrand; and her beloved Grandma Nora.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 3:00–6:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. In keeping with Melanie’s final request, a turkey dinner will be served.

It is fitting that even in goodbye, Melanie wanted everyone fed.

Melanie spent her life working hard, loving deeply, and taking care of people. Her family will carry those lessons forward. Wherever they gather around a table, tell an “Only on Tuesday” story, hear a big laugh, or make one of her recipes, a little piece of Melanie will still be there.
