Obituary

Melvin Clarence "Mel" Nelson Jr., age 52, passed away on August 11, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Born on November 27, 1972, in the city he called home, Mel brought a vibrant spark to those around him through his curiosity, creativity, and generous spirit.

Mel had an inventive mind and a hands-on approach to life. Whether tinkering with electronics, crafting handmade jewelry, or collecting eye-catching rocks, he delighted in exploring new projects—many of which were joyful works in progress. He often referred to his research and experimentation as "doing homework," always eager to learn something new. A familiar sight around town on his electric scooter, Mel could often be found cruising between parks with a smile.

He was affectionately known as the "weather man" among friends and family. Mel frequently monitored radar maps and shared updates when storms were approaching—always looking out for others' safety.

Barbecuing was another passion that brought people together. Mel loved cooking outdoors and sharing meals with those around him. His warmth extended far beyond the grill; if someone needed help, he'd figure out how to lend a hand—even if it meant learning a new skill just for the occasion.

Mel is lovingly remembered by his mother Patricia Carter and step-mother Susan Nelson; siblings James "Jim" Nelson, Gerald "Jerry" Nelson, and Amy (Rick) O'Shea (Nelson); children Michaela Storm (Persons) and Dimitri Persons-Nelson; grandchildren Ayda Dimatteo, Kyrstyn Pierce, and Kayde Pierce; nieces and nephews Hunter Monson, Bailey Monson, Dakota Monson, and Cheyenne O'Shea; along with many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Nelson Sr.; uncle, Dan Mellen Sr.; and sister, Sheryl Nelson.

A memorial service celebrating Mel's life will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 12 PM noon, at the Veterans Park (VFW) in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

May Mel's legacy of kindness and curiosity continue to inspire all who knew him.
