Nicholas Lee Edward Scherf

Nicholas “Nick” Lee Edward age 33, passed away unexpectedly in his home in Calumet Minnesota, August 30, 2026.

Nick, much like himself, was born into this world like a “spark of energy” in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, on July 4, 1993, to Gary Scherf and Suzie Masurka.

Growing up in Grand Rapids, Nick developed an incredibly deep love for the outdoors and had a contagious passion for high-energy sports. He was an extremely avid snowboarder, who spent many winters hitting the slopes at Giants Ridge in Biwabik Minnesota. Nick also deeply enjoyed skateboarding, dirt biking around the Iron Range, going on motorcycle rides, playing music on his guitar, and even skydiving.

Nick graduated high school in 2011 and developed a career as a very skilled drywaller who ran his own business and took immense pride in his trade; he was also very well known in the community for his time working as a lift operator during the winters at Mount Itasca. To those who knew him well, Nick was kind-hearted, incredibly brilliant mind, strong, beautifully stubborn, unapologetically honest and always ready with a quick sense of humor.

Nick was very social, he loved visiting with everyone. He could spark up a conversation with a complete stranger, he especially lit up when he found people with similar interests. Nick also shared a deeply special, unbreakable bond with all of his grandparents. He showed his love for them by never hesitating to help. He did this by always rolling up his sleeves to help with rearranging furniture, heavy lifting, technology issues, or any projects they needed done. Nick was always there for them when they needed him. Nick was also known to be an amazing uncle, although he had a habit of not showing up on time, he never missed a birthday. It didn’t matter if he was dirty, covered in drywall, he was there. He never missed a thing.

Nick was preceded in death by his grandparents; Wayne (Dorothy) Scherf; Kermit Matyas; Mary Dorholt; and cousin, Derek Dorholt.

He is survived by his father, Gary Scherf; his mother, Suzie (Kevin) Masurka; bonus mom, Chassy Burt; his brothers, Vaughn (Océane) Scherf, Hudson Holm, Axle Storrs, Gavin (Alex) Goulet and Dane Marcella-Doty; his sisters, Lindsay (Josh) Helland, Trista Grover, Rayne Burt, Jessica (Johnathan) Reed, Lisa (Chad) Tracy, Danika Masurka, Stevie Scherf and Lily Mallick; grandfather, Dennis Dorholt; grandmother, Jeanie Matyas-Vanderkoi; beloved nieces and nephews, (Trista Grover) Hunter, Aeris, Orin, and Ivar; (Rayne Burt) Beckett and Everly; (Lindsay Helland) Donald and Rose; (Gavin Goulet) William; (Jessica Reed) Hunter, Kaden, and Hailey; (Lisa Tracy) Kevin and Henry. He was also survived by many friends, cousins, aunts and uncles who loved him dearly.

Attire: “Nick Attire” such as fur coats, jerseys, band shirts, welding shirts, flannels etc; (anything you would think Nick would wear).
