Obituary

Philip "Phil" Ratzlaff passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, at the age of 74. He was born on March 2, 1951, in Omaha, Nebraska to Harold and Maxine Ratzlaff.

On May 5, 1972, Phil married the love of his life, Carol, beginning a partnership rooted in faith, laughter, and deep devotion. Together, they built a beautiful life and family.  Phil faithfully served as a pastor to churches in Minnesota, offering wisdom, compassion, and steady leadership to all who knew him.

Phil proudly served his country as a United States Marine, working as an aircraft mechanic and attaining the rank of Sergeant. His discipline, work ethic, and sense of duty carried him through every season of his life.

A man of many talents, Phil played the violin with the Golden Symphony in Colorado during his Junior High years. He later became a masterful wood craftsman, creating with both skill and care. Above all else, Phil loved spending time with his family — camping together, being on the water, and making memories that will be cherished forever.

Phil had a quick and endearing sense of humor that carried him through even the hardest days. Though disabled, he never allowed it to slow him down. His laughter, resilience, and faith helped him persevere and uplift others along the way.

He is survived by his beloved wife Carol, his children, John (Diane) Ratzlaff and Amy (Henry) Chung, and by his three favorite grandchildren, Emily, Katie, and Ethan Chung, who brought him endless pride and joy.

A memorial service will be held at Grand Rapids Alliance Church on Monday, January 12, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. In memory of Phil's joyful spirit, silly socks are encouraged (but not required) — a small tribute to the freedom and happiness he now enjoys. As we celebrate his life, we remember that Phil is free and dancing on the streets of heaven.
