Obituary

Rick Ferguson, 73, passed away very unexpectedly in the Deer River Hospital on February 7, 2023.

Born in Duluth, MN to Don and Myrt (Jackson) Ferguson he grew up in Wirt, MN and graduated from Bigfork High School in 1967 where he played baseball and football which led to being a lifelong fan of the Twins and Vikings.  Rick fondly remembered his walk-on tryout with the Kansas City Royals in the early 70's.  He coached his kids' softball teams and played well into his 40's.  He met and married the love of his life, Char in 1969 while working at Boise in International Falls, MN. They moved to Grand Rapids in 1973 and raised 4 children.

Rick is best known around town as a car salesman for Swanson Motors for 25 years where he was always in friendly competition with his fellow salesman and great friend Rocky Anderson. To him, it wasn't so much about selling cars as it was creating lifelong friendships. He prided himself on not being a "typical" car salesman as he genuinely cared about his customers/friends, which is why he had so many repeat customers who sent their family and friends to him.

When not working, his passion was spending time at home with Char and his dogs, Sugar and Spice. He had a kind, gentle heart and was so humble. Anyone that stopped by to visit was greeted with a warm smile.  Rick enjoyed telling stories, sitting around the bonfire with his friends, homemade wine; also hunting, fishing, and 4-wheeling with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. With wisdom beyond his years, he took every opportunity to teach his children and their friends about life by sharing his experiences.  It is amazing how many lives he touched.

Rick is survived by his wife of 53 years, Char (Lonergan), 2 children: Jay (Angi) Ferguson and Monica (Wade) Holcomb, 9 grandchildren:  Wyatt (Cam Nuhring) Holcomb, Hunter (Gracie Newton), Peyton, McKenzie Locke, Allie, Zane, Jaylen, Beau and Clay Ferguson, sister Lolita Moone (Raymond), many extended family, and special friends Bob Neset, Dan Root, Mark Lallak, Ernie Ness, and Mike Jackson.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents and daughters Michelle Locke and Dawn Phillips.

The family would greatly appreciate any memories, pictures, or comments shared in the guestbook.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Deer River ER and acute care/hospice staff for their care and compassion in the final 28 hours of his life.
