Roger Paul
Holmstrom
d. Jul 14, 2026
Roger Paul Holmstrom, age 82, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the Americare Lodge in Grand Rapids.
Roger was born on September 11, 1943, in Grand Rapids to Henning and Mary (Skogland) Holmstrom. He was raised on the shores of Pokegama Lake, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for Minnesota's lakes and the outdoors. He attended Grand Rapids schools before answering the call to serve his country.
In 1961, Roger enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving for six years. During the Vietnam War, he served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in Okinawa, contributing to the vital construction and engineering efforts that supported military operations throughout the region. His service included stations in Alaska and California, as well as Okinawa, and reflected the quiet strength, dedication, and sense of duty that characterized his life.
Following his military service, Roger married and was blessed with two sons, Paul and Todd. He built a long and respected career in Minnesota's mining industry, working for Hanna Mining Company and later National Steel. After years of dedicated service, he retired from National Steel in 2003.
Roger found great joy in spending time on the water. Whether traveling, water skiing, or boating, he embraced every opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. Those who knew him will remember his steady nature, strong work ethic, and the pride he took in both his family and his country. Roger could often be found at the VFW Post 1720, the American Legion #601, and the Moose Lodge, all of which were life-long memberships for him.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Henning and Mary Holmstrom; his brother, John Holmstrom; and his beloved son, Paul Foss.
He leaves behind his son, Todd, along with other family members and friends who will cherish his memory and the lasting impact he made through a life marked by service, hard work, and quiet integrity.
Funeral services for Roger will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 12:00 noon. Interment with military honors will take place immediately following the service at Harris Cemetery.
