On Sunday, April 2, 2023, Roland "Bud" Borchert joined his beloved wife, Virginia, in heaven. He passed away at Aftenro in Duluth, MN with his family by his side. Bud was born January 12, 1928 in the farming community of Mapleton, MN to Cleo and Roland Borchert. He was the 6 th of 14 children. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in the US, where he worked repairing the airplanes used on aircraft carriers. After the war, he attended the University of Minnesota in Duluth. It was in Duluth that he met Virginia, the love of his life. Bud and Virginia were married in 1952 and were together until Virginia's death in 2013. After college, Bud worked at the Glass Block department store, where he rose through the ranks and became store manager. In 1977, Bud and Virginia moved to Fargo where Bud managed the De Lendrecie's department store. When he retired in 1988, he and Virginia moved to a lake home in Grand Rapids, MN. Their home was a gathering hub for family and friends. In Grand Rapids, Bud enjoyed his long-time favorite past-times: fishing, hunting, and home projects. Bud continued to live in Grand Rapids until January of 2023.
Bud was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his brothers and sisters Dave, Helen, Chuck, Ed, Alyce, Bette John, Tom, and Joe.
He is survived by brothers and sisters Neva, Peg, Bill and Jerry; his daughters, Mary Carr of Duluth, MN, Kathleen (Randall) Mickelsen of Burnsville, MN, and Patricia Borchert-Strouse (Joseph) of Birchdale, MN; his grandchildren, Joseph (Natalie) Carr, Clair (Shane) Skelly, Betsy (Bryan) Kallevig, Alex Mickelsen, Casey (Christopher) Norby, and Gregory Mickelsen; and his great-grandchildren, Weston, Kylie, Tyler, Daxon, Dominic, Emma, Tucker, Lumen and Theo.
Memorial donations may be made to Dementia Society Inc.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 11, 2023 from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, MN. Rev. Fr. Blake Rozier will officiate. Burial will be in Harris Cemetery, Harris Township, MN
