Roy Hjalmer Holmes, age 74, of Grand Rapids, MN passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Autumn Lane Assisted Living, Cohasset, MN surrounded by family.

Roy was born in Grand Rapids, MN in 1951 to Hjalmer K. and Hilma (Oakes) Holmes and grew up in Bovey, MN. He graduated from Greenway High School in 1969, received a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Minnesota Duluth and master's degree from Mankato State University.

He married F. Bonnie Finch on August 27, 1977, at St. Kevin's Catholic Church in Pengilly, MN, and together raised their two daughters.  Roy enjoyed coaching them in basketball and cheering them on in their various sporting events.

Roy worked for the State of Minnesota as the Regional Program Coordinator, Divison of Emergency Management/Homeland Security, for 40+ years.  He enjoyed coordinating and managing the many natural disasters and security events across Minnesota including wildfires and floods as well as working with the various Native American tribes.  When Roy wasn't working, he enjoyed his time at their seasonal cabin at Wa-ga-tha-ka on Wabana Lake around the fire and the annual Holmes family reunion.

Roy is survived by his wife, F. Bonnie Holmes; daughters, Allison (Bryan) Remer and Stephanie (Jay) Pierzina; four grandchildren, Matthew Remer (15), McKenzie Pierzina (13), Abigail Pierzina (11) & Joseph Remer (10).

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 10:00am at Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, MN followed by the 11:00am memorial service.
