Penny Hammann, age 84, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on May 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Born So Yon Yang on November 17, 1941, in Pyongam-Namdo, Korea, her life journey was one of courage and determination. From the bustling city of Seoul to the small town of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, along the Mississippi River, hers was a life that spanned worlds she could have never imagined as a young girl. As a young woman, she met William "Bill" Hammann while he was serving in the U.S. Army stationed in Korea—a meeting that would change the course of her life. Upon marrying on May 14, 1964, she made the brave journey to the United States, building a new life with Bill grounded in love, resilience, and hard work. She was fiercely proud to become a United States citizen, a milestone that meant more to her than words could fully express.

They made their home on the shores of Pokegama Lake, a place that became the heart of countless family gatherings. Penny's home—and especially her beloved garden—was her pride and joy. Each summer, her garden flourished under her careful tending (and very specific direction), feeding her family and giving her plenty of well-earned bragging rights.

She was a devoted mother to her sons—Terry, Larry (Jen), Bill Jr. (Jean), and David Hammann (Amy), all of Grand Rapids. Known as a proud "boy mom," Penny raised her sons with a firm hand, a strong will, and endless love. She found great joy in her role as a grandmother and, in recent years, as a great-grandmother. Her love extended through generations, and her family will carry her spirit forward in countless ways.

Though small in stature—standing under five feet tall—Penny's presence was anything but small. She had a fierce personality, a natural leadership spirit, and a reputation for being in charge wherever she went. She was also one of the hardest workers you could meet, dedicating many years of service to Arrowhead Promotions.

In quieter moments, Penny could often be found knitting—creating quilts, slippers, and dishcloths that her family will treasure for years to come. Those simple, handmade pieces now serve as a reminder of the fierce love she had for her family.

Penny was preceded in death by her father, Kwang Yong Yang, and mother, Yang Nim Kim; her three brothers and one sister; and her beloved son, Bill Jr. She is survived by her husband Bill, who she was married to for 62 years, her sons Terry, Larry, and David, their families, including 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Penny's life was a testament to strength, family, and fierce love—and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A visitation will be held at Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, Minnesota on Thursday, May 7, 2026, beginning at 12 noon with a service to celebrate her life at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.  Chaplain Richie Danielson will officiate. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Harris Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
