Susan G. Swanson, age 81, of Deer River, MN, passed away August 15, 2023, at her home with her husband at her side.

Susan Georgiann Broscoe was born February 22, 1942, the daughter of Frances (Chlopowicz) and Walter R. Broscoe in Chicago, Illinois.  She grew up and attended Arlington Heights High School and graduated at the age of 16.  Following high school, Sue worked in a medical laboratory.  On Friday, March 13, 1959, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Swanson in Prospect Heights, Illinois.   Together, Sue and Bob raised their two children, Betsy and Eric.

As a young woman, Sue was very involved in her church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Prospect Heights and served on the Board of Ministers. She enjoyed volunteering and found her niche with the Girls Scouts of America.   Sue was a Girl Scout Leader for many years.   She truly enjoyed mentoring many young girls and participating in Girl Scout activities.

Sue became the President of the Girl Scout Council in Northern Illinois and retired from the Girl Scouts of America as a Training Director.

In 1999, they made their home on Johnson Lake in rural Deer River, Minnesota.  Prior to retirement, they purchased several cabins from the former Johnson Lake Resort and later built their beautiful retirement home on that property.  Sue enjoyed fishing, gardening, swimming in the lake, scenic photography, and knitting. Prior to retirement, Sue took up the winter sport of cross-country skiing and continued the activity with some of her Minnesota friends.  She can be remembered as a proud and thoughtful woman, a great cook, a defender of animals, and a trustworthy friend.

Sue will be deeply missed by her husband of 64 years, Bob; her daughter, Elizabeth Swanson; and her son, Eric (Erin) Swanson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Frances Broscoe.

A memorial service will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, September 9, 2023, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1111 North Elmhurst Road, Prospect Heights, Illinois.  Interment will follow at St. Adalbert Catholic Cemetery in Niles, Illinois.   Susan's family is extending an invitation to join them for a luncheon, fellowship, and reminiscing at the White Eagle in Niles, Illinois beginning at 12 Noon.  This event center is on the opposite side of Milwaukee Avenue across from the cemetery.  Please RSVP to Eric Swanson (eric_a_swanson@rocketmail.com) if you plan to attend.
