William F. Filipiak, age 85, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away Friday, January 26, 2024, at Grand Village.
William Florian was born January 10, 1939, in Moose Lake, Minnesota to Florian and Lucy (Fabeck) Filipiak. Bill graduated from Moose Lake High School in 1956. Following high school, he entered military service in the United States Navy. During his tour of duty, he worked as an aircraft mechanic until his honorable discharge in 1960. He returned home, and married Carol Shusta and together raised 4 children. In 1989 Bill was united in marriage to Alice Holbein and became a stepfather to her 2 sons. Bill had a long career as a logging contractor.
Bill was an active member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Cohasset. He was also a member of Grand Rapids Moose Lodge #2023, Loggers Association, Pilot Experimental Aircraft Association, and AOPA. Some of his favorite hobbies included flying his Cessna 172, hanging out with his friends at the airport, fishing, hunting, bowling, and time spent with family and friends, especially his grandkids. Bill was an excellent woodworker and had made many beautiful bowls. He loved to travel and enjoyed cruises, especially to Alaska. Bill worked hard and played hard and was good at napping in between.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Laura; brother Richard.
Bill is survived by his wife Alice of Grand Rapids, MN; children, Tony ((Sandy) Filipiak of Grand Rapids, MN, Susan Carol of Cohasset, MN, Debbie Filipiak (Dan Supan) of Burnsville, MN; step sons Jeff (Deb) Holbein of Port Charlotte, FL, Don (Sue) Holbein of St. Cloud, MN; grandchildren Justin (Megan) Lokken, Karl (Ellen) Lokken, Tiffany (Melissa) Lokken, Faith (Tori) Filipiak, Trisha Holbein, Kayla (Jacob) Cox, Abbey (Thomas) Haugen; 9 great grandsons; sister Antonia Filipiak of Bloomington, MN; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Our family would like to thank staffs at Grand Village and St. Croix Hospice for the amazing care they provided Bill.
A visitation will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Cohasset, MN with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 AM. Father Blake Rozier will officiate. Burial will be at Wildwood Cemetery in Cohasset, MN.
